Jim Tuman had been recommended to me by a number of our Student Council Representatives who had heard him speak at leadership camps. They were excited to tell me that he would be great for our student body.
When we invited him to come to Notre Dame Prep and Marist Academy he told me some of the topics he speaks about but also asked if there were any specific issues hat we wanted him to address; why were we inviting him to come? He wanted to be sure to touch on concerns that we had rather than to just give an already prepared speech.
He came and spoke to 970 students form grades 6-12. He grabbed and held the attention of all these students sitting in our gym bleachers for 65 minutes. He asked them questions and allowed them to ask questions but had no trouble regaining their attention. They were genuinely interested in his message to them. Many of the students stopped to shake his and or hug him and tell him how much they enjoyed his talk and appreciated his message. Over the next few days I received emails and phone calls from parents who spoke about the impact that Jim had on their daughters and sons. He did a great job of connecting with a large audience ranging in age from 11-18.
His message was simple but so important for high school and middle school students to hear. With his humor and the examples he used, the students found him to be real and his message could be applied to their lives now and for the future. I am pleased that I listened to the Student Council Reps who had heard Jim Tuman speak and agree with them that he was great for our whole student body.
